Snacks- they are often seen as the devil in disguise when it comes to sticking to a healthy eating regime. However, did you know that HEALTHY snacks can actually be a good thing? This is because eating small portions every few hours helps to speed up the metabolism, and can also prevent hunger-fuelled binges by keeping the blood sugar levels steady.
Over here at team M&S headquarters, we like to have our three main meals each day, with three healthy snacks in between them. We believe that it isn’t about eating LESS, it is about eating RIGHT!
Suz: I am most likely to snack at around 4pm because I get hungry. This is expected because by this stage I have already been working hard all day plus been through a yoga session and a gym workout- sometimes more! I know it is important to nurture my body after all that exercise!
Mike: I am most likely to snack when I am relaxing or watching a movie. This is a time when my body is reenergizing, rehydrating and repairing itself, so a healthy snack is fine by me!
Remember that it isn’t about how much you eat, it is about the quality of the food you are eating! Traditional snacks tend to be high in sugar or way too processed to be considered healthy, so we have a whole bunch of alternatives! Give unprocessed foods such as raw fruit, vegetables or nuts a go! You can even get creative and make your own healthy versions of ‘traditional snacks.’
We bet you will love the recipe below as an alternative for that 3pm reach for a muesli bar (usually containing WAY too much sugar!)
Pistachio Puff Snack Bar
-3 cups plain puffed brown rice/puffed quinoa
-1 cup pistachios (shelled)
-1 cup melted coconut oil
-1/2 cup ricemalt syrup or stevia
-2 tsp vanilla extract
-1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt
Blend pistachios, rice malt syrup, vanilla extract, salt and coconut oil to create a butter-like consistency.
Pour mixture into a saucepan and stir over a low heat for 10 minutes
Add mixture to a large bowl and stir through the rice puffs
Press the mix into a lined baking tray and refrigerate for 20 minutes or until firm. Cut into rectangles and store in the fridge
Yum! A treat that will keep you full and satisfied- without the sugar or additives!
