Men And Yoga

Hey guys, (and girls, if you’re interested in this post!) Mike here!

I just wanted to do a little write up on what it is like to be a male in the yoga world!




We all know that yoga is often marketed or stereotyped as a ‘girls thing.’ However, this is just a cliché and something that should be blatantly ignored! Yoga is for EVERYBODY- it doesn’t matter what gender, age or fitness level you are, yoga can find its place in your lifestyle. For your information, fellas, yoga was originally ONLY for men- but luckily for girls, that has definitely changed! Now everyone can enjoy the benefits of yoga– and I challenge you guys out there to give it a go!


When I introduce other men to yoga (and especially hot yoga) for the first time, they often think that it is going to be too easy for them and usually brush it off as ‘a girl thing.’ I always have a little laugh to myself about this, because after about 10 minutes of a hot yoga class they quickly learn that this workout is just as tough (if not, tougher!) than any other!


For me, yoga has been a huge part of my workout regime, fitness, lifestyle and recovery. I live a very active life- full of gym workouts, hikes, runs and whatever other activity Suz and I decide on! It has increased the flexibility of my hamstrings, hips and shoulders, preventing injuries and increasing my recovery rate.




Yoga has also taught me the value of mindfulness and has helped me to be more focused on my goals. I tend to get fired up easily, and yoga is the only thing that calms me down (besides my wife, Suzanna!)


Suz: ‘Mike can get a bit cranky sometimes! At these moments I give him some VERY simple advice… Go do a yoga class!!!!!!!’


From a male yogi perspective, I advise all men to head to a hot yoga class and THEN tell me that it isn’t a challenge! It will not only be a fantastic workout, but it will also improve your strength and flexibility… and who knows, you might even score a date with a girl! (just don’t make that your main reason for going!)
