Essential oils are becoming increasingly popular for those who wish to care for themselves though holistic methods. There are so many different types of oils out there, and remedies for just about anything. They can be used in cleaning, in recipes (always check the label first! Some essential oils cannot be ingested), in skin care and even during yoga. Yoga is another popular holistic approach to improving health and wellbeing, and essential oils can be used to compliment your practice. Remember, many essential oils on the market are synthetic so that cannot be ingested — if you wish to use in cooking or in your water, make you’re the brand you buy has ingestible oils. Like with all products, be sure to do a skin test before using any oils to make sure you’re not allergic, and experiment to find which work best for you. This can be the fun part because there are SO many to choose from!
Lavender
Lavender oil is traditionally used for relaxation. It has calming properties, so if you are finding it difficult to quiet your mind during class, dab a couple of drops onto your temples before class or before savasana. You can even add lavender oil when washing your yoga towels, so that your practice is always fresh and calming.
Eucalyptus or peppermint
If your nose is often blocked while practicing, these two oils can help to clear the airways. Rub a couple of drops of either of these oils between your hands and inhale the aromas to get your sinuses ready for class! These oils are also uplifting and refreshing, preparing you for a positive, strong practice.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood is a great oil to evoke strength and encourage centering. It calms the mind but also helps to awaken the senses, creating a positive mindset for your practice. Put a couple of drops on your temples or the soles of your feet to get yourself in the mood for yoga.
Lemon
Lemon is detoxifying and uplifting. Add a couple of lemon oil drops to your water before class (again, ensure that your lemon oil brand is ok for ingesting!) and sip throughout class. Lemon oil water with a pinch of Himilayan salt is also a naturally rehydrating mix.
Suz:
“I often add lemon to my water. I find it uplifting and refreshing — plus, it is good for the metabolism and the skin!”
Ginger
Ginger oil is a good one to use just before your practice. It has grounding properties and is known for bringing the mind to a present state. Rub on the wrists or simply inhale the aroma from the bottle before class to fully arrive on your mat.
These are just 5 suggestions — there are literally thousands of essential oils out there to experiment with and use in day-to-day life. Give them a go — your yoga practice could benefit from it 🙂
Namaste!
